Classic adventure games more commonly known as point and click games have evolved and almost died out at the end of the 20th century as most of the best known ones came out in the 90s and started out mid 80s.
The premise was a more narrative driven game with puzzles that revealed new things and had adventure and investigation etc. Games like Monkey Island, Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle are some of the more popular games that were on the PC but never caught one after that with the new generation of consoles like the Playstation and Nintendo systems. As they never adapted many point and click in a mainstream way because of the lack of action in the games.
Though there are popular games that have a similar style of classic adventure like games made by the game studio Quantic Dream which made Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls which are both very heavily lead by the narrative and choice of options that affect the ending. Other games like the Wolf Among us by TellTale games have the same style of story telling significantly based on the choice of dialogue options and choice of action when confronted with different options.
The Wolf among us uses the same gameplay style as telltale's first successful game The Walking Dead Season 1. The game is released in episodes coming out months apart similar to a television series. In my opinion this does have a compelling story or narrative and keeps the player interested. The game solely relies on this as an uncompelling theme and narrative with boring dialogue sequences can get the player to lose interest and stop playing altogether because there is no real control or action that makes it feel like an actual 'game'. This is more like a interactive TV series where you can affect the momentum of the story rather than a 'game' because of the lack of control and that we are used to in other games. This isn't an original Intelectual property either as this is based off the comic book series of the same name so this gives synergy between both platforms of entertainment and crosses fans on both sides. This immediately gets people interested as there may be many that enjoy the comic book series and would also like the game.
Besides dialogue options there are quick time events which makes the player activate possibly random actions on the controller that are displayed on the screen to give you a sense of control during high profile sequence like a chase or a fight.
